Fortnite has finally released its long-fabled Playground. After weeks of server crashes, lackluster updates and the occasional tweet, fans can finally test out their building skills in a free-for-all mode. The Playground LTM has different rules than the other modes released by Epic Games, which might be complicated for players to understand. Here’s a full rundown of what makes the Playground so unique and special.
-
One Squad- Playground isn’t a LTM where you fight others, it’s a testing ground. The maximum number of players on one map is four, and they are all on the same team. Playground took longer than expected for it to be released; developers had a hard time increasing server capacity enough for the game to run smoothly. It took a lot of mechanical, behind-the-scenes tweaks, but players can finally build to their heart’s content.
-
Friendly Fire is On- One of Fortnite’s biggest problems is its lack of dedicated servers for hardcore gamers. Playground allows team members to shoot each other, potentially allowing for duels between friends or enemies. It’s a solid step in the right direction to cementing Fortnite esports as a serious contender.
-
Timer is Ticking- You only have one hour to play a game in Playground before the match ends. Like regular Fortnite games, the storm closes in on the center of the map from the moment the game starts. Once you hit 55 minutes, the storm will close in rapidly, potentially destroying all your building hard work. Make sure to plan accordingly when creating your masterpiece.
-
More Resources- Like most LTMs, you collect metal, wood and brick easier in the Playground. All of these resources accumulate 10 times faster, allowing you to fill up your resource meter and head straight to building. There are 100 loot llamas on each island to find and break apart, along with 100 percent more ammo boxes and chests.
-
No Challenges- You cannot complete Battle Pass challenges in Playground LTM. It’s a sad but necessary consequence for a mode where anything is possible. Fans would find a way to cheat the system and earn experience in ways that shouldn’t be allowed, cheapening the experience for those who already have completed their tasks.
