Nintendo has announced several surprise 2019 games for its Switch platform, as well as new content for existing games and fan favourites making the jump from other consoles.
Thursday’s ‘Nintendo Direct’ broadcast was bookended with big announcements, closing with a reveal trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, a remake of the beloved, quirky entry in the series first released on Game Boy in 1993. The game has been recreated in a toy-like cartoony style that makes the world appear to made of plasticine.
Of the new games announced, the strangest was possibly Tetris 99, which could be best described as a block puzzle take on the battle royale genre popularised by Fortnite.
Nintey-nine players take on the classic game at the same time in an online match, inflicting handicaps on others when they make big combos, until only one is standing. This is a free-to-download game available today, and is clearly meant to drive interest in the Nintendo Switch Online service, a paid membership that allows online play.

Earlier in the broadcast the company had revealed Mario Maker 2, which is set for release in June. The game is a creation suite that lets players build their own sidescrolling Mario courses using graphics, items and enemies from across a range of different games; from the original NES and Super Nintendo entries right through to 2013’s Super Mario 3D World.
Levels can be shared online for others to play. The trailer, which pokes fun at the fact that slope surfaces were impossible to craft in the original Mario Maker, includes Luigi in the logo which implies some form of multiplayer.
Elsewhere Nintendo gave extensive new looks at its other 2019 games including Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Yoshi’s Crafted World and Daemon X Machina, with the latter two receiving downloadable demos today. There was no sign of the Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion or Gen 8 Pokemon games which are expected to launch late this year, but a new exclusive from Bayonetta and Nier Automata developers Platinum was revealed in the form of Astral Chain.
